The Grammys

As I write this I’m watching the Grammys since so manytrivia questions are about music. AsI only listen to country, I always look at my team mates with a blankexpression. [Except last week when theDJ asked what is the drinking implement featured in Toby Keith’s latest hit(answer: Red Solo Cup)]

I admit much of it the program’s isn’t thrilling me so Idecided to look up trivia. I smiled when I found out that the Grammys wereoriginally called the ‘Gramaphone Awards’…that name certainly wouldn’t cut itwith the current audience. I wonder ifthe kids even know the gramophone once was used to play records. Likewise do the winners know they’re latchingon to a ‘stunt’ trophy because the real one, which is handmade, is toodelicate?

I like the fact that the person who has won the most Grammysat 31 awards is conductor Sir
Georg Solti, who led the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 22 years. Alison Krauss comes in 2^nd with 28awards.

Age doesn’t matter in this peer-based award: LeeAnn Rhimesis the youngest to win at age 14 while Pinetop Perkins is the oldest at age 97.

The most Grammys for consecutive albums honor goes to PatMetheny and his band at seven while Jimmy Sturr [18 out of 24 Best Polka Albumbefore the award was discontinued in 2009] and Bill Cosby [6 years running forBest Comedy Album] have won the most consecutive awards in the same category.

Someone who doesn’t want to be confined to any particularmusic genre is Béla Fleck, who has been nominated in morecategories than any other musician, namely country, pop, jazz, bluegrass, classical, folk and spoken word, as well as composition and arranging.

With respect to the song of the year, the only multiple winners in this category includeHenry Mancini 1962 and 1964), James Horner (1988 and 1999) and the band membersof U2 (2001 and 2006) winning two times each. On the other hand, songs writtenfor Andy Williams and Roberta Flack have received this award twice.

Has a song in aforeign language ever won song of the year? Oh yes, “Volare” in 1959 byDomenico Modugno in Italian. Best music memory ever for me…listening to ‘Volare’ while gliding along the Venice canals.

Sketching a Book

I don't often post about the writing process as there are a lot of blogs with inciteful posts about writing. However, as I slide back into a writing frame of mind, working on a new book, I am aware of one different approach I use: sketching a book.

I already have an OneNotebook [electronic notebook] in process for HIS DARK GUARDIAN with GMC'S in process, research growing, etc. Over the weekend I curled up with sketch pad in hand and jotted notes. I started with one central plot idea in a corner and drew from there. Nothing has to make sense or be sequential as the sketch is not a chart. They're thoughts.

They may trigger notes to research; they may lead to taking a second look at a character. What they mean is the book starting to mesh together. I am a visual person and need to 'see' the ideas laid out. For a while I toyed with changing the hero's occupation but when I saw the fleshing of the theme, I knew I'd been right with the original decision.

My next step of the process is to draw columns for each major character and start listing various incidents and possible reactions to them. As I braid the events in the columns, the characters' themes emerge. In my latest release 'Her Dark Protector', the themes were justice is society's glue, law of the jungle, 'I am above the law', justice has failed. Depending on his/her theme, a character's going to take a certain action in response to a situation. Their reaction may cause another character to react, again in accordance to his/her theme, etc. :) Carol

Let There Be Friendship

This year's theme for the Times Square crystal ball really struck a chord for me: 'Let There Be Friendship'. My parents are both deceased and what little family remains is scattered throughout the country.

However, over the years I have been blessed with circles of friends. Friends from writing, friends from practice of law and friends from playing trivia, etc. This Christmas I sat at the table along with ten others at a friend's house. We'd had a great meal and were simply talking when one person brought out a deck of Christmas trivia cards. Whenever a question pertained to a song, we would break out singing; for other questions we would shout out answers before the question was completed. At some point I looked around at the laughing, smiling faces and realized over the years I had built myself a family. Not one of blood but of love and fellowship.

So for 2012, my wish for everyone is friendship. I only hope your life is as enriched by friends as mine is.

Xmas Traditions: Food Glorious Food

Food from the mundane to the unsual plays an important role in festivities across the world. Sit down for Xmas dinner in Norway and you may smell the aroma of old blue cheese. What you are actually getting a whiff of is Kiviak, a delicacy made from the raw meat of an auk in an advanced state of decomposition after the bird meat has been buried under a stoneencased in a sealskin for a few months.

Belgians serve cougnou, also called bread of Jesus. A sweetbread molded in the form of baby Jesus, it is given to children on Xmas along with a cup of hot chocolate.

In Slovakia not all food ends up being eaten. Slopping the ceiling is a tradition at Xmas Eve dinner. The head of the family takes a spoon ofLoksa (a dish made out of bread, poppy seed filling andwater) and throws it up at the ceiling. The more mixture that remains glued onthe ceiling the richer his/her crops will be the following year.

Want your wish to come true? Then in Great Britain you would stir your Christmas pudding clockwise.

Expect a few surprise guests in Portugal where 'consoda' is a special feast served on Xmas morning. The table is set with extra seats for the souls of the dead and food is offered in the hopes the souls will bring the family good luck.

In Japan come Christmas day fried chicken is the food of choice and lines form around Kentucky Fried Chicken. However, McDonald's is offering chicken specials . Hold the pickles...speaking of pickles...

Warding Off Evil-Another Xmas Tradition

Santa Claus and his reindeer had better watch out for they're not the only ones out and about on Xmas Eve.

In Norway people hide their brooms for witches and evil spirits are bent on stealing brooms for a joy ride. Mops and brushes are also hidden. Men sneak out of the house to fire shotguns to scare off the witches...or just to make a lot of noise.

The Greeks may build a crackling fire or hang pig jaws inside chimneys to fend off evil spirits called Kallikantzaroi. Descriptions vary, but these half-human, half-animal pests live in the earth only to surface for the twelve days of Xmas to wreck havoc. Good thing. During the year they spend their time sawing the World Tree. The dawning of Xmas distracts them from sawing and they go to the surface. When the sun begins moving again on the Epiphany, the Kallikantzaroi return to their world only to discover the Tree has healed itself. Back to the sawing for these folklore goblins.

Christmas Traditions Across the World

In the days leading up to December 25, I'll be exploring different Xmas traditions around the world.

If they followed tradition, girls in the Czech Republic are currently waiting to know their marital future as part of their Christmas celebrations. On December 4, girls put cherry twigs in water. If the twig blossoms before Xmas Eve, they will marry sometime during the year.

Of course, children have been definitely behaving for St. Nicholas aka Svaty Mikalas climbs to earth down from heaven on a golden rope along with his two companions: an angel [Anděl] and a whip-carrying devil[Čert ]. For those kids who have been nice, they get presents from St. Nicholas; those on the naughty list they get visits from the devil with the switch. Talk about good cop/bad cop.

However, the naughty or everyone else for that matter might really want to avoid Krampus Night. Krampus isSanta’s evil twin whose job is to beat and punish all the children who havemisbehaved. On the eve of St. Nicholas Day (December 6th) party-goers masquerade as devils, wild-men and witches and drunkenly run around towns hitting people withsticks and switches. The Krampus legend originates in the Germanic alpineregions and is widespread throughout Hungary, Bavaria, Slovenia and in Austria.

More Pint-sized Libraries

The British phone book library that I featured in the last post has caught on. As phone booths fall into disuse, other enterprising individuals have converted them into 'libraries'. Clinton, New York uses a bright red British kiosk to house about 100 books. The Book Booth even has a Twitter and Facebook following.

Think an American open-box style of a phone booth can't be used as a library? Think again. Several have popped up and the one in Highland Park, CA is labeled with a Book Crossing serial number.

Small-sized libraries are not limited to phone booths. This miniature book depository known as a corner library is located in Brooklyn, New York. About the size of a doghouse, it contains a small scale of resources one can find at a regular-size libraries from books to CD's.

Walking in a park and have an urge to sit and read a book? This book stand is located in a Korean park.

Laying claim to being the smallest freestanding library in America is Norman, AK's, which is the size of a small bedroom, about 177 square feet.

Sandra Hyatt

The talented USA Today best-selling author Sandra Hyatt passed away this year. Her last book Lessons in Seduction is being released today in print and on December 1 in e-book. I'm joining others in the romance community in getting the word out about the book.

I had the privilege of meeting Sandra at the RWA Convention in Washington, DC and then again in San Francisco. She was bright, energetic and very giving of her time and talent to others. Her writing was superb as evidenced by her best-selling status and it is no surprise that Romantic Times Magazine has rated her last book with a 4.5 star rating. Unusual Libraries

Afterlearning about the Derby Line library, I wondered if there were other unusuallibraries. To my delight, there are. This little gem is private, built to housea Tolkien collector’s extensive collection.

Then here’s one of theworld’s smallest libraries in the world. When a British phone company wanted totake away the iconic red phone booth in the England town ofWestbury-sub-Mendip, the locals rescued the booth by using it as a library.

Open 24 hours a day, thebooth has a light inside for midnight browsing of the 100 books, CDs, and DVDs donatedfrom the libraries of the townsfolk.

A Library With No Books

International border line within the library

In the United States there's a library with no books and an opera house with no stage, and they're both in the same building.

I've been researching Vermont as the setting for my next book and came across an interesting oddity. The village Derby Line that borders Canada has a library deliberately built to span both countries.

Derby Line was incorporated in 1791 but because of an erratic survey, the border separating Canada from the United States was drawn incorrectly by the surveyors in the 18th century, above the 45th parallel which was the agreed boundary. Derby Line was founded based on that line, above the 45th parallel.

A binational couple, the Haskells, chose to construct the Haskell Free Library and Opera House on the international border in 1904 so that people on both sides of the border would have use of the facility. Patrons of the library from either side of the border may use the facility without going through border security.

The library collection and the opera stage are located in Stanstead, Canada, but the door and most opera seats are located in Derby Line.

The library/opera house isn't the only place with the international border running through it. For some individual homes, a meal may be prepared in one country and eaten in the other.

We're Baaaacck!

While I still can't access Blogger via my main Internet, I finally have been able to access through another service. Go figure.

Since I've last posted, I finished Her Dark Protector, which has a release date of March 26, 2012 from Carina Press. This book begins my new mini-series called "The Justice Hunters" centering on a shadow society. The Justice Alliance for centurieshas guarded justice and the rules of laws. Whenever chaos threatens to reign, the organization steps in. Calling themselves the Justice Hunters, themembers come from all segments, from business leaders to professors, but mosthave something in common: they have lost a dear one to violence. As opposed to vigilantes, they strive toprotect witnesses, find evidence and otherwise help to maintain order. They have eyes and ears everywhere from thecourtrooms to the streets.

As the release draws closer, I'll tell more about the book. In the meantime, Maddie is happy to have my full attention again. I'm also tackling my long neglected yard and house and looking forward to the holidays. My trivia team The Blazers continues its winning ways and in the future I'll be posting about some interesting bits-and-bobs of information. Of course, Maddie will be adding her two-cents in.

9-11 Never Forget

On September 11, 2001 I was at work preparing for a deposition when I walked into the kitchen to get a cup of tea. A few co-workers were watching the TV and told me a plane had flown into one of the World Trade Center towers. We stood there watching the coverage and wondering how on earth a plane could hit the tower and what a tragic accident.

Then in disbelief we watched the second plane hit the other tower. I said, "That's no accident. That's an attack."

The horror continued to unfold but I had to go to my deposition on another floor. During the course of the deposition, an alert sounded and we had to vacate the building. Panic, fear and shock pervaded every aspect of our lives that day. I know I never want to feel so helpless, so out of control ever again.

Later I learned a few of the terrorists had stayed briefly at a motel only a few miles away from where I live, and it gave me the absolute creeps that those monsters could have been standing next to me in a grocery store and I never would have known it.

I hope that nothing mars the remembrances today. My heart goes out to all who lost loved ones that day. My prayers go to those in service who protect us. And no, we'll never forget. Carol

Ode to Vermont's Covered Bridges-Bennington to Burlington

I've been fortunate to travel, but one of my all time favs was a trip in October 2003 to see Vermont's fall colors. My friend and I decided on a whim that rather than spend time in stores we would see how many of the infamous covered bridges we could find. What a blast.

We explored the twining back roads, saw sights we never would have from the main highways, lunched in country stores & met locals who calmly directed two crazy tourists to obscure bridge.

I know the people of Vermont have a steadfast fortitude and they will recover from the flooding. In fact, I'm setting my next book in Vermont so...I'm going to revisit that wonderful time when my friend and I managed to find dozens of bridges. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate the log/map that I wrote down all the bridges' names so I only have a few names matched up with the photos. :) Carol

The Power of Photography in a Year of Loss

All my friends know that my love for photography centers on nature/scenic photos. I kick, scream & fight whenever asked to photograph people. I especially detest the posed variety photos. If I photograph people are all, I go for those shots where the person doesn't know what I'm doing.

However, I am grateful to those who over the years have insisted that I take photos at events, that I need people in shots as this has been a year of loss for me. From the sudden death of a young attorney in my firm to the loss of an author today who had been kind to me at RWA conferences. For three of the five losses, I've had photographs to give to family and friends, and for the other two, I've been able to look at photos taken by others.

Because of these photos, I have images of these people captured during good and happy times, and I'll be able to remember them in those moments whenever I think of them.

So while I still may grumble when asked to photograph people at events, I'll remember I'm capturing friends and loved ones in happy moments that I'll be able to share. Carol

At 4:24 p.m. on August 14, 2011 I emailed to my Carina Press editor the completed manuscript of Her Dark Protector. The book is hopefully the first in a series that I've been calling "The Justice Hunters" about a secret justice society.

The moment I punched 'send' I felt tremendous relief for I had once more met my deadline. However, I also experienced great trepidation. I've lived with this book and its characters since the beginning of the year. I care about them and their story so I fret whether I did them justice. The book is my baby and it's hard to step back and be dispassionate.

I know I wrote the best book that I could at the time and pushed myself to expand in areas of the craft. Now I have to sit and hope that all is well and everyone will love it.

Maddie here. Carol's in a state of collapse from finishing Her Dark Protector today. Carol still has to revise and fine tune the book before turning it in, but as she says, she'll meet her deadline. This book that will be a Carina Press release features a secret justice society with loads of chase, fight and love scenes. You should have seen her working out a fight last night. All that weaving and shifting made my head spin.

She asked me to post few photos from Napa Valley since her brain cells are liquified and talking coherently is beyond her. However, I decided I'd post a few of my favorite shots. Hee! Maddie

A Fond Farewell to the Harry Potter Movies

Although I saw Deathly Hallows II last weekend, I went again today, this time to see it in 3D, something I rarely do. With the cost of movies nowadays, I've cut way down on movie going. However, I realized I had to see Deathly Hallows II again as I was reluctant to say goodbye to the movie franchise. Hallows II had given me everything I'd hoped for in wrapping up the journey...I simply didn't want it to end.

Ten years ago I went to see The Sorcerer's Stone to see what every was talking about. A little red-haired boy sat next to me in the theatre and proceeded to tell me he'd been told that he looked like Ron Weasley. Aghast to hear I hadn't read the books yet, he gave me a quick overview. When the movie began, I too became enchanted and began a love affair with the wizarding world.

Every year for a decade, I, like everyone else, waited anxiously awaited for the next movie installment. I watched Harry, Hermoine and Ron grow up along with all the other Hogwart students. Tales of growing up, courage, friendship and eventually love played against the theme of death.

What was noteworthy about the series was that so many actors continued to play the same characters throughout the years. They too were familiar faces and had character arcs winding and twisting with the main ones. Who would have thought Neville Longbottom by standing up to his friends in Sorceror's Stone would foreshadow standing up to Voldemort in Hallows II?

While I have all the DVD's and can watch the series whenever I want to, what I can't do is see a new movie in theatre [unless they decide to make movies along the lines of Pottermore].

As an author, I can't imagine the relief and yet sadness J.K. Rowling must have experienced when she wrote 'The End' on Deathly Hallows. As a movie goer, I am sad I can't follow new adventures and I don't know what will have the 'legs' to fill the void.

I still haven't read the books, holding that pleasure out for another day. I have to have something to look forward to. :) Carol

Healdsburg

Head north of Napa Valley and treat yourself to amazing vistas on your way to where three important wine producing regions [Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River] come together: Healdsburg, founded in 1857.

I discovered Healdsburg on my first trip to wine country several years ago, and it wasn't hard convincing my friends to head that way this year. We had a blast, especially when we ran into a red light on a section of the road where there was no intersection. As we waited for nearly 15 minutes for the light to change--with no traffic in sight, we realized they had road construction with only one lane open. Finally one truck came rolling into view from the opposite direction.

Before reaching the main drag, we stopped at the tasting room of the award winning Seghesio, my first love in Zinfandel's. Even after several years, we still got more 'bang for a buck' with the wine tasting with the friendly and knowledgeable staff. The store also has unique gifts for the wine lover.

Once in Healdsburg you'll find the charming 19th plaza in the town center with towering redwoods and the square of eclectic shops and restaurants. The weather was gorgeous and we wandered in and out of the stores. The bookstore had a few friends' books in the front display.

Happy 4th of July Trivia!

Actually, John Adams would be very surprised the date celebrated is the 4th. The Second Continental by adopting the Lee Resolution officially declared independence on July 2, 1776, after which John wrote his wife, "the 2nd day of July 1776 will be the most memorable...in the history of America ." Sorry, John.

Just be thankful you didn't face 68 changes to the original draft of the Declaration like its author Thomas Jefferson did with the word count going from 1817 to 1337. And writers think they have it bad nowadays.

Although the movie "National Treasure" created a fictional clue to a treasure on the back of the Declaration, there is an actual inscription appearing upside down at the bottom: "Original Declaration of Independence, dated 4th of July, 1776." Not as exciting as the movie, but what the 56 men did on July 2nd was. The language of the Declaration was adopted on July 4th.

As the first person to sign the document, John Hancock wrote his name in large letters so that "John Bull" [England] could read it without spectacles. After his signature was affixed, the document was sent to John Dunlap's print shop. The 150-200 copies made became the 'Dunlap Broadsides' with an estimated 25 copies still in existence.

The emgrossed parchment copy produced by Timothy Matlock was signed by most the delegates on August 6, but the last signer was Thomas McKean of Delaware in 1781.

The youngest signer was Edward Rutledge of South Carlina at age 26; the oldest was Benjamin Franklin at age 70.

The 56 men who made the historical declaration of independence were lawyers, physicians, merchants, landowners, farmers, printers and inventors. They faced lost of fortune, imprisonment and death. Samuel Adams would be declared a traitor due to his role in the Boston Tea Party; four signers would be captured and imprisoned, including Edward Rutledge. Homes of nearly 1/3 of the signers would have their homes/estates destroyed or confiscated.

On that summer day in Philadelphia, the 56 men who subscribed to the Declaration of Independence wrote their way into immortality in American history: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Thank you to those remarkable Patriots and to all who have served and protected these unalienable rights. Happy birthday, America! Carol

RWA-It's the comradery.

My first Romance Writers of America conference was at Dallas in the early 1990's. I recall standing in line for cappucino and chatting with others. Suddenly, I became thunderstruck when I realized one of the ladies was Iris Johansen. Later on in the executive lounge...er...the bar, my roommate and I spent nearly an hour speaking with a friendly woman who was up for her first RITA. We screamed our heads off when she won.

That's the beauty of a RWA conference, the absolute accessibility to publishing world. There's nothing like the published members' willingness to share their knowledge and lessons learned to those thirsting to write.

Since my first conference, I've missed very few. This one I'm sitting out as I had a fabulous trip to Napa Valley and San Francisco. However, I'll miss seeing all my friends and agent who are now streaming to NYC. The conferences have all had their special moments for me.

In New Orleans I celebrated my pink ribbon for my first sale, and Heather Graham sent me a bouquet of flowers. I also attended my first Harlequin party where I became starstruck when I glanced over and found Nora Roberts cutting the rug next to me.

For NYC, not only did my critique put on a workshop but also I won both first book and long contempory categories in the National Readers' Choice competition. Afterwards, I sat in the bar along with my editor and pitched the concept of a female Perry Mason that became the Legal Weapons series.

I will also hold the San Francisco conference close to my heart as I had so much fun with my friends when we toured the wine country.

Ultimately, beyond the workshops, parties and ceremonies, the RWA conference is about the friends you make and the wonder of being with like-minded individuals. It is a magical time, and I wish all who are descending upon New York a fabulous time! I'll be following those #rwa11 tweets.

The building was constructed with no straight lines and the roof was planted with grass and trees. Huntdertwasser capped the buildings with gold turrets to elevate man's sense of himself. One of his other design principles was color was king...all too evident from the labels the artist created.

Founded in 1969 on property adjacent to the Stags Leap Winery, Quixote employs organic farming principles to produce its Petite Syrah and Cabertnet Sauvigon. Since its 2001 vintage, the winery has used twist-top bottles. The staff was welcoming and very informative. When bad weather [hail!] delayed our group's departure, the staff en masse entertained us. I did buy a bottle of the Petite Syrah as it had my favorite note of black pepper and spice against the backdrop of dark berries.

Kuleto Estate

Visiting Kuleto is not for someone afraid of heights or torturous switchback track of a road. However, once you reached this winery perched on a side of a mountain, your reward will be a stunning vista.

Created in 1992 by culinary entrepreneur Pat Kuleto, this mountainous vineyard overlooks Lake Hennessey and the town of Rutherford. Kuleto designed terraced blocks of vineyards planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Chardonney. He later added Syrah, Zinfandel and Muscat. The winery features a 17,000 square foot gravity flow facility.

The estate is by appointment only, and one quickly learns why. On the narrow track featuring switchbacks, our bus ran into another...with no room to pass. Rule of the mountain applies with the vehilce going up having road rights so we watched the other driver back up until the track widened enough for us to pass. A wee bit nerve-racking.

Our group was greeted by a guide and our first glass of wine sipped on a wide terrace with a fantastic view of the mountainside. Then we strolled past the owner's Tuscan-styled house to the overlook of Lake Hennessey. Glorious.

Next up was lunch with a different wine paired with every dish. Exquisite. The staff was so friendly and willing to answer questions. The entire experience was perfect.

However, as a Florida driver used to flat land, I'll leave the drive up to Kuleto to someone experienced in mountain driving. :) Carol

One year ago this week Carina Press launched with 37 ebooks and man has it grown! I've been privileged to part of its launch year, and it's been an amazing experience. I've met so many great people and made wonderful friends. My editor Gina Bernal is too die for as an editor and the cover art has been amazing.

The Carina Press author community is savvy and amazing. and now I'm part of the NOT YOUR USUAL SUSPECTS blog. Not only were COURTING DISASTER and COURTING DEATH released in ebook format but also as audio books by audible.com so I've been part of a whole new market.

I can't wait to see what Carina has up its sleeve for its second year. Under the steerage of Executive Editor Angela James, the amazing digital team of Malle Vallik and Jenny Bullough, the acquisitions folks, the editors and art department, I suspect the readers will be in luck for more quality reads embracing so many genres.

And I will continue to be part of the growth and development with my next book for Carina Press in which I'll introduce a secret justice alliance: HER DARK PROTECTOR.

When a loved one is ill

I have a number of friends experiencing the stress of aging and/or ill loved ones. One said today that she didn't know what was wrong with her because she lost her temper. I told her nothing was wrong with her; she simply is experiencing overload.

Having gone through the trauma of two ill parents, I know all too well what my friends are going through. Juggling a full-time job, taking the loved one to never-ending doctor apppointments, maintaining the home front, and in some cases, trying to write, can't be done indefinitely. Moreover, the loved one is going through an emotional roller coaster of pain, uncertainty, anger and fear.  The person may even resent the caretaker as it's easier to focus their emotions on a closest target available.

Sooner or later a ball is dropped, words are said. One feels guilty for feeling guilty. The albatross of illness is overwhelming and there is no quick fix or easy answer. My best advice is not to be hard on oneself. We're all human and need to be kind to ourselves. With my parents, I took to sitting outside, even for five minutes, and did nothing but sit. Or curl up with a book for fifteen minutes before going to bed. I tried to carve out a few precious moments that were mine alone.

I did break down several times but I always managed to get back up. Even now, years later, I wonder at times if I had handled things this way or that way, whether I could have eked out a few more days of life for my parents, but I know that's just the insiduous guilt nipping at me. I did the very best I could under the circumstances life threw at me, and that's what I tell my friends. We're not perfect; we're human.  All any of us can do is the best we can in the moment, tell the person we love them, and let the guilt go.

It's Action Movie Season!

As people can probably guess, I'm an action movie junkie. Every winter I go into mourning while the dramas hold court in the movie theaters. However, Memorial Day heralds in summer and I'm going to be so broke going to the movies.

First up on my list is "X-Men: First Class". James McAvoy as Charles Xavier...need I say more? Second up will be "The Green Lantern". Super special effects and Ryan Reynolds in green outfit that leaves nothing to the imagination.

At long last in July is the concluding chapter of the "Harry Potter" movies and the previews are awesome. I'm also looking forward to "Captain America" with its WWII setting.

My absolute, must-see movie of the summer, though, is "Cowboys and Aliens". Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig...I have been looking forward to seeing them together on the screen ever since I saw a YouTube clip months ago.

Get the popcorn ready. It's going to be a hot, hot summer. Here's to hours of on-the-edge-of-your-seat viewing. What movie are you looking forward to? :) Carol

Far Niente

I loved Far Niente for its spectacular grounds. An appointment-only winery, Far Niente was first established in 1885 by gold rush miner John Benson. Like many of the Napa vineyards, the Prohibition hit it hard and it was abandoned. Gil Nichel purchased the property in 1979. During restoration, the original name, Far Niente, an Italian phrase meaning "without a care:, was found carved in stone on the front of the building where it remains to this day.

The tour begins in the caves and includes the carriage house with classic cars. The estate is known for its chardonneys and cabernet sauvignons, and boy, they know how to serve up a wine tasting. Tourists are presented with a plate of cheeses to pair with the wines. I never would have paired a dessert wine with blue cheese, but it worked. My personal fav was from Far Niente's sister vineyard, Dolce. Let me tell you, Dolce lives up to its name of 'Liguid Gold'. A blend of late harvest Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc, Dolce is perfection of winemaking artistry. :) Carol

It all began with Kate Rochelle's story in COURTING DANGER for Silhouette Bombshell in 2005, and now with CARINA PRESS's May 2nd release of COURTING DEATH, the Legal Weapons series concludes [at least for the moment]. DEATH features Nicole Sterling and one of my favorite heroes, Sam Bowie. Their relationship was actually born in another book when I first began writing...a book now trashed as a learning experience. However, Nicole and Sam stayed with me and finally I found the story for their combustible relationship.

I loved exploring the friendship of three strong women and the relationships with the three men who ultimately win their hearts, and I hope you will enjoy the legal adventures of the law firm affectionately known as 'Debt, Default, & Miscarriage'.

Schramsberg

The second winery I would recommend making a reservation to visit in Napa Valley is Schramsberg. Seeing the endless tunnels dug into the mountainside by Chinese laborers filled with bottles vs. casks is an amazing sight.

In 1862, German immigrant and barber Jacob Schram purchased a large piece of land on the mountainsides of the Napa Valley. Along with his wife Annie, they planted European varietals, and began to produce wine, establishing the first hillside winery. Jacob remained a barber to supplement his income, while the work at Schramsberg continued. After fully realizing the summer heat in the area, he hired Chinese workers to help him dig his cool underground cellars.

Gradually, the winery and vineyards grew until the Schrams had fifty acres of bearing vines and were producing upwards of 12,000 cases per year. Jacob shipped his Riesling, Hock, Burgundy and Chasselas to New York and beyond. His wines were winning awards at American and International competitions.

As they continued to prosper, the Schrams had a lavish Victorian built to replace the original cabin they lived in. The house became a gathering spot for the many friends and colleagues the Schram's had become familiar with, including Robert Louis Stevenson on his honeymoon. The Schrams would be featured in Stevenson’s book “The Silverado Squatters”.

"In this wild spot, I did not feel the sacredness of ancient cultivation. It was still raw, it was no Marathon, and no Johannesburg; yet the stirring sunlight, and the growing vines, and the vats and bottles in the cavern, made a pleasant music for the mind. Here, also, earth's cream was being skimmed and garnered: and the customers can taste, such as it is, the tang of the earth in this green valley. So local, so quintessential is a wine, that it seems the very birds in the verandah might communicate a flavor, and that romantic cellar influence the bottle next to be uncorked in Pimlico, and the smile of jolly Mr. Schram might mantle in the glass." Stevenson's Journal.

After the death of the Schrams, the winery fell into disuse and the property was abandoned until 1965 when Jack and Jamie Davies bought Schamsberg. The Davies set out to produce sparkling wine – specifically, "America's most prestigious, select and admired sparkling wine; chosen for special guests, special gifts, pampering one's self and expressing one's taste in unique products." They envisioned their sparkling wines, fermented in the authentic Méthode Champenoise, as in the manner of great Champagnes.

The 1965 Blanc de Blancs was a product of the first commercial use of Chardonnay in American sparkling wine. The 1967 Blanc de Noirs followed, an accomplishment in California premier Méthode Champenoise wines in that it was produced using Pinot Noir according to the classic style.

In 1972 the 1969 Blanc de Blancs was served at the "Toast to Peace" in Beijing, between President Richard Nixon and Premier Chou Enlai; Schramsberg wines have been served by every subsequent presidential administration.

I had a fabulous trip to Napa Valley last week. This was my second visit and again, I learned even more about wine and its history. One of the vineyards I would recommend is Chateau Montelena of the movie 'Bottle Shock' fame. Although it shot to fame after the 1976 'Judgment of Paris' tasting, the estate's history began in 1882 when rope entrepreneur Alfred Loving Tubbs bought 254 acres of land just north of Calistoga at the foot of Mount Saint Helena. Tubbs planted vines, and by 1896 Chateau Montelena was the seventh largest winery in the Napa Valley.

However, like so many vineyards, the Prohibition brought an end to winemaking. The estate would change hands. In 1958 Yort Wing Frank, a Chinese electrical engineer, and his wife Jeanie bought the Chateua and excavated Jade Lake.

It wasn't until 1972 that the Chateau undership a partnership that included attorney James Barnett once more produced wines. Four years later, the Chateau Montelena 1973 Alexander Valley Chardonnay won first place among the chardonnays and white Burgundies entered in the "Judgment of Paris" wine competition. A bottle of that vintage is in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Our group was met by a guide who related the history and then we were shown into a spacious room where we watched a clip of 'Bottle Shock' and then indulged in tasting both chardonney and cabernet sauvignion. I actually picked out the 2007 Estate Chardoney as my favorite, and the guide told me that it was a favorite of those at the Chateau. Fabulous wines, intriquing history and tranquil grounds. :) Carol

Click "add email" on right.

Scroll down to the "Send email from" box and fill in the email you want to send the email from. Be sure that this is the same email you added to approved email addresses when you were setting up your reader
account.

Note: This is not the @Kindle email address that you are mailing TO but your personal email address that you'll be sending FROM. Since several friends reported problems with using an aol address, I opted to use set-up a gmail address as Calibre had a button I could click on to set it up.

To see if you’ve have the system set up, click’ Test email in lower right corner’.

You should get a "mail successfully sent" message. If you did not, that means you haven't set up either the TO or FROM email correctly.

Click Apply in upper left corner, and then click close, to close preferences.

Ebook Primary-formats

Maddie's eyes glazed over when I mentioned the topic for this week's blog so we agreed I would handle this topic.

As my next two books COURTING DISASTER and COURTING DEATH are coming out from Carina Press in digital form and I have sold another [HER DARK PROTECTOR] to Carina Press as well, I figured I'd better start learning about this new world of publishing...

Except I found out that digital is not so new. Founded in1971 by Michael S. Hart, Project Gutenberg is the oldest digital library. It is a volunteer effort dedicated to preserving books and has been converting public domain books to digital. A reader can download for free many books ePub, Kindle, HTML and simple text formats: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

But what are these formats? When I got the copy of COURTING DISASTER, it was in EPUB and PDF formats so I had to research what these designations and found there are an endless array of formats. I discovered there are proprietary ereader formats [generally specific to a particular ereader] and secondary formats. Proprietary ones include the following:

AZW - Amazon’s file type for the Kindle series of ereaders. The AZW extension is used on ebook files that are protected with DRM and files that are not protected.

PRC/MOBI – is the file extension of the Mobipocket reading software. In either case it may be DRM protected or non-DRM

LIT - a filename extension for Microsoft Reader ebooks

LRF/LRX/LRS/BBeB – BBeB is Sony’s format. LRF denotes DRM free files and LRX file types are encrypted and can be set to expire.

Secondary formats included:

PDF – Adobe’s “Portable Document Format” is immensely popular but often does not format well to the small screens of ereaders. However despite its drawbacks it remains a popular format.

TXT – Plain text format, readable by most ebook devices

RTF – Text format for Word and Office, readable by some ebook devices

DOC – this can refer to Microsoft Word format.

HTML – Hyper text mark-up language, aka the language most web pages on the Internet are coded in

EPUB - EPub is a free, open standard for "reflowable" content, meaning that the text display can be optimized for the particular display device.

ACSM - File format used to provide DRM on Adobe ebooks PDF and ePUB

PPT – Power Point files

At this time, the vast majority of e-books on the market are distributed as PDF files, meaning they can be read on any computer or device that can read PDF files. (For example, if a reader computer has Adobe Acrobat or Preview installed, s/he can read e-books that are distributed as PDFs.)

What does the proprietary and secondary formats mean to a reader? A potential pain in the neck as a reader has to deal with compatability issues. As a newbie Kindle owner, I ran into the problem when I downloaded my first book from a non-Amazon site. Then horror of horrors, again when I received the copy of my own book as I couldn't load them onto the Kindle. The Carina Press author listserve came to the rescue and my next blog will be about a program that makes the warring formats play nice with each other.

Carol had a great time at Sleuthfest last weekend. She got to finger print, tour both a bomb squad van & an Animal CSI van. Most of all, she got to hang out with her friends Sandra Madden & Marcia King Gamble along with other FRW members. Heather Graham threw a rocking party on Saturday night. Of course, I found all the treats she hid around the house while she was away. She can't fool me. You know she had to take a lot of picures, so here's a few. I'm off to beg a treat.

My personal Sally Fields' moment

I experienced my own Sally Fields' "You like me, you really like me" moment on Wednesday. I got the call from my agent that I had another sale to Carina Press. Not only was it book sale #7 but the news marked my second decade of publishing contracts. Whatever my writing career is, a fluke it's not.

Over the ten years I've learned the most I can write is two books a year because of the day job.  However, I've made every deadline, come hell or hurricanes.  While my house may look like a hurricane hit it and I will never, ever win a clean house award, I religiously get up every morning to get my 1-2 pages in before I head into work.

As an attorney one has to have a tough hide and I've needed it during rejections. After all, each book idea is my 'baby' that I've spent countless hours researching and putting together.  I care about my characters; they live and breathe for me. At times they'll even whack me over the head if I''ve gone down the wrong path with them.

My book COURTING DEATH releasing on 5/2/11 contains two such characters, Nicole and Sam. They first came to life for me at the start of my career. While I scrapped the initial book they were in, I finally came up a story that worked for them. I'm glad they stuck it out with me.

If I had to cite my main qualities as a writer, I would say I am stubborn, determined and persistant. You have to be in this business to survive. However, all the perseverance in the world wouldn't matter, if people didn't like my voice, my stories, my characters.

So thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be a storyteller. You really, really like me.  :) Carol

NASCAR

Today's Daytona 500 was the stuff fairy-tales were made of. A young man who just celebrated his 20th birthday and was racing in only his 2nd Sprint Cup race. Trevor Bayne was paying his dues, drafting for the most part as the pusher with some of the biggest names in racing. As wreck after wreck thinned the competition, he stayed almost scratch-free. In the end he was in position to cross the finish line first.

People ask why I love NASCAR. I love the diehard fans and listening to prerace concerts with Brad Paisley singing "Country Song". I love the moment of prayer and the displays of the American flag. I love the fact that Martina McBride could belt out the National Anthem without screwing it up. I love the celebration of God and country at every race.

I love the dedication of the drivers to their craft, sport and community. They form dog charities rather than kill them. They support a wide range of causes, giving generously. They take care of their own. They show up for endless practices rather than threaten strikes. On occasion they settle differences with fist fights. They work hard as a team and when a driver crosses the finish line first, it's a team celebration.

It's a sport where Jimmie Johnson has accomplished the incredible by winning 5 Sprint Cup Championships in a row. It's a sport where 10 years after his death remembering the Intimidator Dale Earnhardt can still bring tears and heartache.

I don't find NASCAR boring at all. I celebrate the sport as the heartbeat of our country where fairytales do come true for a parttime racing outfit Woods Brothers with their first Sprint Cup victory since 1976 with the famous David Pearson.

Boogity, boogity. It's going to be a great season. :) Carol

Plotboard on an electronic notebook

I'm a pantzer rather than a plotter, but I have set up an electronic plot board as a guide of where I should be in the book. Obvious benefit of an electronic plotboard is the portability. You can add information as you go along and make changes. Use different colors, fonts, etc. to help highlight turing points and POV's.

I haven't experiented with it yet, but since a page length is unlimited in electronic notebooks, for the next book, I may try fewer columns for extra width and go with more rows.

World building using OneNote

One workshop at last week's Southwest Florida Romance Writers' conference was on world builing. The speaker was paranormal, urban fantasy author Kristen Painter. http://kristenpainter.com/

This seminar came at the most opportune time as I reworking a proposal and need to strengthen the world building aspect. Of course I immediately set up a OneNote electronic notebook when I got home. I've set up the main tabbed sections as history, time, geography, location, culture, religion, characters, language, names, magic, rules, research and notes.

Then I've set up the subsections. For example, the subsections for culture are who's in charge, how government works, how money works, who has wealth and who doesn't, and class system. Under location I'll rough up sketches using the drawing tools and also paste photos. For notes I've already posted feedback from my critique group.

Instead of paper folders crammed with documents, I'll be able to search for certain information by simply entering a world or phrase. As this notebook grows, that is going to be a handy feature.

If anyone has tips on using OneNote for world building or any other organizational tips, I'd love to hear them.

Southwest Florida Romance Writers Conference

On the spur of the moment I decided to attend the Southwest Florida Romance Writers' Conference yesterday. My agent Roberta Brown was speaking on a panel, and I needed one of her hugs. Since I probably won't attend the RWA conference this year, I would be missing out on my usual time with her.

At 5 a.m. I was up and after getting dressed, took Maddie for her walk. Venus and the quarter moon were so close they appeared to be cuddling.

With hot tea in hand, I began my trek west across Florida. It was almost a 3 hour trek across Alligator Alley, which cuts a swath through the heartland of the state. Since I was driving, I couldn't take pictures, but I saw egrets, osprey, blue herons, and hawks. I got lost right before reaching the hotel in Estero, but finally found the hotel.

The look on Roberta's face when I snuck up & gave her a hug. The room was packed with attendees. Romance suspense author Roxanne St. Clair, http://www.roxannestclaire.com/, gave a moving keynote speach, weaving together a story of her beloved father with inspiration. She is definitely 'keen'.

Kristen Painter gave a really great workshop on worldbuilding and I'll blog more about that later this week. I had a relaxing lunch with mystery author Marty Ambrose, http://www.martyambrose.com/, Roberta and agent Marlene Stringer.

The agent/editor panel consisted of Roberta, Marlene along with fellow agents Susan Crawford, Miriam Kirss & Christine Witthohn as well as editor Alex Logan. They gave a lot of good advice that I tweeted simultaneoulsy. @CStephensonFL

One tidbit I will try to take to heart. If you blog, you need to do it consistently several times a week. While I was trying to provide information in prior blogs, it takes time, which I don't have consistently. So...I'm going to go for more of a live journal approach. I can babble about things going on in my life and I'll call on Maddie for her dog perspective at times.

Blame the Babylonians...

Blame the Babylonians for establishing the tradition of setting New Year's resolutions. Their most common one was to return borrowed farm equipment. I wondered if they had any more success than the rest of us in keeping such a simple resolution. I bet there was always a crop emergency that arose delaying the return. Or worse, the borrower broke the plow and didn't want the owner to know.

I'm not a journaler, but on New Year's Eve I take the time to jot down meaningful & not so meaningful things in my life over the year. I enjoy the time of reflection. As for the future, I avoid resolutions as I tend to believe there's always going to be a crop emergency to screw things up. However, I will set a few pragmatic objectives as otherwise the year will fly by. I think one of the most endearing quality about human beings is our never-ending hope for a brighter future and the undaunting willingness to improve ourselves or try new things. You know, repair the plow or plant another crop.

Maybe the Babylonians had the right idea after all.

New Orleans as a book setting

I love New Orleans. I dreamed of visiting it when I read 'French Silk' by Sandra Brown. The ambience made my mouth water. My first experience was the 2001 RWA Conference, particularly memorable for me as I was celebrating my first book sale. Walking along the streets was an unbelievable experience: the architecture, the grillwork, the Cajun music blaring from the stores; the Dixieland bands marching in the streets.

The next time I saw NO was post-Katrina when I attended the 2007 Heather Graham's Writers for New Orleans Conference. The Katrina wounds were still fresh and raw. However, the revival was already underway with restaurants reopening and new homes being built.

I returned in 2009 for the Florida Family Law retreat and the French Quarter Jazz Festival was fabulous. Crowds roamed the streets and music filled the air. The energy was amazing.

I know NO has taken another blow due to the oil spill, but the city's spirit is precious and indominable. Here's to New Orleans and hoping Heather Graham's Writers for New Orleans Conference is a smashing success. My question is: what is your favorite book set in NO? :) Carol

Books Remembered: Jane Aiken Hodge

Although I have always loved books, my true passion for them began with Jane Aiken Hodge. My mother introduced me to Jane when I was around eleven, resulting in an affectionate battle as to who would get to read her latest release first.

Ms. Hodge’s romantic suspense novels transported me to different historical periods and settings. Against the backdrop of the Regency England, the Napoleonic War, Greek War of Independence, and even the American Revolution, she wrote stories of strong, determined women who against all odds found their happily ever after. At the time, I didn’t realize the significance of one of her heroines being over thirty or books about the Napoleonic War being set in Portugal or Moscow rather than England. I simply knew that I loved them.

They were fast-paced, mysterious stories with emotionally satisfying endings. I read her books over and over again, so much so I suspect that I absorbed pacing into my very bones. Between 1961 and 2003 Jane published more than 40 novels.

Born on December 4, 1917 to Pulitzer prize-winning poet Conrad Aiken and his first wife [Jane’s sister was children’s author Joan Aiken], the writer Jessie McDonald, Jane achieved first writing success with ‘Camilla’ published in installments in 1961 in the US magazine, Ladies’ Home Journal. Later published in book form as Marry in Haste, 'Camilla' was set in Napoleonic Portugal.

Hodge’s first published book, Maulever Hall (1964), reflected her admiration for Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, whose biography Jane would later write. This was followed by The Adventurers (1966), dealing with thrilling moments during Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow; The Winding Stair (1968), another tale of romantic suspense in Portugal; and Savannah Purchase (1970), describing early-19th-century intrigue in the Southern US city where Ms. Hodge’s father was born. The titles go on.

My personal favorite was The Adventurers as the heroine disguises herself as a boy to flee after her family is killed by Napoleon’s retreating army and meets up the bad boy hero, a card shark. Against the backdrop of a world torn apart by violence, Ms. Hodge created an unbelievable tale of adventure where romance prevails. Sigh.

Jane Aiken Hodge died on June 17, 2009 at age 91. I still have all the paperbacks my mother bought, which is my memorial to the author who had immeasurable impact on me.

My hat's off to Alison Kelly & the rest of the RWA staff for pulling off the switch in location for the RWA 2010 Conference. All in all it appeared to go smoothly.

On Wednesday I hit the road at the crack of dawn to get to the Harlequin Digital Clinic. Harlequin and Carina Press digital guru's Malle Vallik, Jenny Bullough, Jayne Hoogenberk, and Amy Wilkins presented great information on how to use social media as an author. Very beneficial especially for a novice like myself. On a lunchbreak, I met up with fellow Wordy Wenches Sandra Madden and Vicky Koch for lunch. Congratulations to Vicky for placing second in the RWA Scriptscene competition for her screenplay adaptation of her published romantic comedy, HOLIDAY
HEAVEN!

Wednesday nite kicked off with the Literacy Booksigning. Over 500 authors participated with 3600 attendees, raising $55,000 for literacy, with the proceeds going to ProLiteracy Worldwide, Orlando’s Adult Literacy League, and the Nashville Adult Literacy Council.

After the signing, my fabulous agent treated her authors to dinner at Shula's Steakhouse. The meal was too die for. I managed to save the bone from my steak to bring home to Maddie [When I couldn't find a cooler at the conference hotel, Roberta came to the rescue with her suggestion that I put the bone in a water holder that was in our goody bag and fill it with ice. Then when I arrived home, I popped it in the oven.]

Thursday I met with Roberta to discuss my career plan over breakfast. I had waffles with Mickey Mouse ears! I attended a reception in the Harlequin Hospitality Suite and caught up with Intrigue authors Lisa Childs and Delores Fossen. Next I lunched with the Harlequin NASCAR authors and editors Marsha Zinberg and Stacy Boyd. It was so nice to tell NASCAR stories!

After attending a few workshops the Florida Romance Writer group gathtered.

I attended the Awards Luncheon on Friday to listen to the goddess Jayne Ann Krentz give an inspiring speech. I sucked it up and got a new publicity photo taken [hate, hate, hate having my own photo taken!]. At least I didn't break the camera.

Friday nite I dined with the Carina Press staff and met several of their exciting authors. We ate at Il Mulino and the food was sheer heaven. Then the HQ "Picture Perfect" party capped off the nite at the Waldorf Astoria. What a fabulous time!!!!!

HELEN MACINNES: MASTER OF THE ESPIONAGE AND SUSPENSE NOVELS

Before Robert Ludlum, there was the ‘Queen of International Espionage Fiction’: Helen MacInnes. Yet her first career could have mirrored those of her ordinary heroines caught up in the world’s events: a librarian.

Born on October 7, 1907, in Glasgow, Scotland, Helen graduated from the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 1928 with a degree in French and German. Working as a librarian, she married the classicist Gilbert Highet in 1932. Together as translators they traveled extensively throughout Europe before Gilbert was appointed Professor of Latin and Greek at Columbia University and the couple and their son moved to New York in 1937.

Over the next 45 years she would write twenty-one spy novels. Her books pitted ordinary men and women of decency and fortitude against the faceless agents of totalitarian regimes: the Nazis in the 1940s and then thereafter the Communists and their terrorist compatriots. At the time of her death on September 30, 1985, over 23 million copies of her books had been sold in United States alone.

What I think I appreciated most about Ms. MacInnes’s novels was her emphasis on the ordinary person thrust into intrigue where danger threatens the social fabric against the backdrop of international settings. However, what I thrilled to most was the romantic subplots.

Her book The Salzburg Connection (1969), which concerns an effort by various individuals to retrieve Nazi loot from an Austrian lake, has been nominated by NPR for the 100 Greatest Thrillers Ever. My personal favorite was Decision at Delphi…sigh, all those wonderful Greek archaeological sites.

Going Paperless with my Research

At work we've been progressively going paperless. When an article was passed around on an attorney's journey of going paperless, he mentioned electronic notebooks for trial and in particular the One Notebook. I realized One Notebook was included in programs on my laptop.

With great trepidation since I am sooo not a techie, I tried it out. When I packed away my notes and research material on my last proposal, I realized how little physical material I had. Typically I have several expandos filling a shelf. Although the research on the latest had taken months and was expansive, it barely made the folder expand.

The reason was the electronic notebook. I had copied and pasted most of the internet articles and photos into the notebook.

I still don't understand all the functions, but for my new book the first thing I did was set up the notebook with sections for characters, settings, plot, timeline, etc. This time around I drew a table for my plotboard and a triangle that I've always used to follow the push-pull dynamics among the principal characters [i.e. if villain does this, how will it impact on the heroine or the romance]. I've also set up a page to keep track on my writing progress.

I will automatically save the notebook on a thumb drive along with the wip, but to have the notebook at hand on my laptop is amazing.

Best yet, I'm saving trees. :) Carol

Cleaning and ear rubs

Maddie here. I haven't posted in a while, but watching Carol cleaning and organizing the house wears me out. She talks about being a lean, mean writing machine for her latest deadline so she wants no distractions. She even put my toys into the basket...ha! When she's not looking, I've been sneaking them out one by one.

I have to say, she did a good job of getting rid of the clutter and putting together bags of stuff to be donated to charity. I can actually walk into the closets and check out things of interest. However, I thought the mopped floors needed a special touch. I drank water too fast a couple times and spitty uppy.

I did show how much I appreciated her cleaning up after me. Last night when she tried to go bed early, I nipped and wrestled with her. Although she told me to settle down and go to sleep, she still rubbed behind my ears until my eyes closed.

Life is good.

The Women Drivers of NASCAR--Ethel Mobley

Nothing more fun than sibling rivalry in sports. The Flock family boasted three brothers and one sister competing against each other as pioneers on the NASCAR racetracks.

Ethel Mobley (née Flock) (March 8, 1920 - June 26, 1984) of Fort Payne, Alabama became the second female to drive in NASCAR history. Her three racing brothers were Tim Flock, Fonty Flock and Bob Flock. She was married to Charlie Mobley, who fielded Tim's car in NASCAR's modified series.

On July 10, 1949 at NASCAR's second event ever at the Daytona Beach Road Course the four Flocks raced against each other. The event was the first to feature a brother and a sister, and the only NASCAR event to feature four siblings. Moreover, the race featured two other female drivers (Sara Christian who finished 6th and Louise Smith who finished 20th).

Ethel beat Fonty and Bob by finishing eleventh (her career high), and Tim finished second. She made her only other career Cup start at Langley Speedway and finished 44th. In June, 1949, she entered a racing competition in Florida, competing against 57 men drivers. She finished in 8th place.

On August 7, 1949, Ethel Mobley became the first female racecar driver to compete against men in the state of Georgia when she entered a race at Central City Park Speedway in Macon, Georgia. She was rated as the top woman driver in the southeastern United States, having won many competitions in all-women races.

In 1948 her brother Bob built New Atlanta Speedway just outside Jonesboro. To attract larger crowds, he invited Ethel, Sara Christian, and Sara’s sister, Mildred Williams, to race at the new track. During her career she raced in over 100 NASCAR Modified events.

Women Drivers of NASCAR: Louise Smith

Born July 31, 1916, Louise Smith hailed from Greensville, SC. In 1946, three years before he started NASCAR, Bill France Sr. needed a novelty driver to promote a race at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway: he chose Louise.

While she had never been to the racetrack or driven a race car, she was rumored to have "outrun every lawman and highway patrol" in the area.

Smith's fearless and aggressive style of driving earned her a Third-Place finish that day in 1946. Although Smith was only chosen as a publicity stunt for one race, she made a name for herself in the racing world by recording 38 minor-league victories over an 11-year span. Along with those wins she broke nearly every bone in her body, and one crash that left her with 48 stitches and four pins in her knee. Although she retired from racing in 1956, she remained associated with the sport and returned in 1971 as a car owner for numerous drivers.

In 1999, Smith was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.

On April 15, 2006 she died at the age of 89. Although she was not truly the first woman driver in NASCAR, barnstormer Louise was known as "The First Lady of Racing."

The Women Drivers of NASCAR--Sara Christian

I’m a trivia buff. With all the attention on Danica Patrick, I became curious about women who blazed the racing tracks. First up, Sara Christian (1918-1980).

In her 2 year-career driving on what is now the Sprint Cup circuit, Sara Christian racked up a number of firsts:

She competed in NASCAR’s inaugural race on June 19, 1949 at Charlotte Speedway, finishing 14th.

She, Ethel Mobley and Louise drove in the second race at the Daytona Beach Road Course on July 10, 1949, making it the first race to include three woman drivers.

The Daytona race marked another unique event. Sara’s husband Frank Christian also competed, with the Christians being the only married couple to compete in a NASCAR race.

Sara was also the first woman to make a Top 10 finish. Sara finished 5th at Heidelberg Raceway in Pittsburgh, the only Top 5 finish by a woman driver in NASCAR history. At the end of the 1949 season Sara finished 13th in point standings and received the United States Drivers Association Woman Driver of the Year.

Retiring in 1950, Sara was inducted in the Georgia Automobile Racing Hall of Fame in 2004.

Kanye (whatever the heck his last name is) is an unmitigated thug. I waited to hear his apology...what garbage. He now is blaming his mother's death for brutalizing a 19-year-old girl on television?!?!

What a load of crock! On the Jay Leno show the cretin couldn't even look at the camera when he mumbled the apology without even saying Taylor's name. And most likely he's going to get away with his actions without any major consequences.

I also have a bone to pick with the audience of celebrities. Was everyone's butt superglued to his/her chair? When they saw this thug grab the mike and act eratically did no one think that Taylor could potentially be in danger? Was everyone such a coward that he/she couldn't rush up on stage and stop that monster's tirade? I would have hoped some guy in the audience could have punched the creep's lights out.

Where were the heroes? Oh wait . I forgot. These were people who pretend to be that they are somebody. Sigh, Carol

Justice not served today

I'm sorry. I normally don't question a judge, but today's sentencing of a woman who plotted the murder of the mother of her ex-boyfriend and nearly succeeded in killing his young son as well was ridiculous. The woman only got life against the jury's recommendation. Oh yeah, I am sooo certain that this cold-blooded creature is going to spend her life repenting her wrongs as the judge asked.

Right. Can't wait for this judge to come up for re-election. Carol

RWA Conference

I'm finding it hard to juggle Facebook, Twitter and my blog. All these social networking options can be real time zappers so if I'm silent here, you can find me on Facebook most likely.

I had a great time in DC at the RWA National Conference, but then again I always do. I get to see friends that I only get to see once a year and catch up with them. I had a fun roommate in Sandra Madden. We managed to sneak away and tour both the Spy Museum and Newseum...fabulous museums and the history preserved!!! I didn't eat at any bad place and three places we simply walked in without any recommendations.

I arrived Wednesday and as my room wasn't available, I went to concierge and asked how far the National Cathedral was. When he indicated it was a mile and about a 15-20 minute walk, I took off. It was a mile as a crow flies...it took about an hour criss-crossing roads that kept going uphill. But the hike was worth the trip. The church was magnificient. All the stained glass windows throw ribbons of colors across the stone ceilings. I didn't take the tour, simply wandered around with my camera. Independence Day

On my writing chapter's listserve, someone posted an article about the fates of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Very moving about their sacrifices.

Knowing people's stories is what draws me to doing genealogy. I'm both fascinated and proud of what I've learned so far about my ancestors. Just this past year I learned that I'm one of the million descendants of the Mayflower Pilgrims [my ancestor was the one who was swept overboard but caught a line and was saved]. Between 1620 and 1650's, the most direct lines of my family settled in Virginia and Maryland. They served on colonial assemblies and were sheriffs, lawyers and planters.

One ancestor lost everything in the religious war in the 1650's in Maryland. Family legend is another was hung by the Tories during the Revolution. One family lost their homestead in the aftermath of the Revolution with three brothers heading west and the other three brothers staying east. I'm a descendant of one of the westward-ho brothers who settled in Ohio.

As much as I can determine, family members have served in nearly every conflict beginning with the Revolution [the only conflict that I haven't pinpointed yet is the Korean War].

So here's to the colonial settlers, founding fathers and all those who have served and continue to serve this country.

Congrats, George Strait!!!

I'm a huge George Strait fan so I was thrilled that he was at long last recognized as Artist of the Decade. 57 number one hits. Unmatched in any genre. Even a greater achievement, these number one hits have spanned 4 decades.

But the performances tonight underscored why: not only he's a great singer, he tells the story of the song. While a few of the country artists did a passable job of singing his hits, a number of them couldn't even begin to equal his performance of the song.

I agree with George: he needs to keep singing and give us those wonderful songs.

Batted 1000

I batted one thousand this week between Dancing With the Stars and American Idol. All my votes went for Shawn and Kris. I'm thrilled for them both. Kris was my dark horse AI candidate once the final 13 were picked. Week after week he impressed me, and I loved his ability with both the guitar and the piano. He just kept growing in confidence and giving solid performance after solid performance. I know the judges were "Adam, Adam, Adam" all along, but Adam always made me hyper. Kris is the kind of singer one can curl up with and feel good or go to a concert and come out relaxed and happy. His would be an album I could buy.

So enjoy, Kris. And Shawn, your competitive spirit was amazing.

But I don't get to catch my breath because tomorrow night begins "So You Think You Can Dance." :) Carol

Crime Watch

I went to my first neighborhood Crime Watch tonight. I wanted to see the chief of police and other officers in person [having only seen them on TV on occasion]. I also wanted to hear their plan of action for the burglaries that have been plaguing the area.

Goal no. 1 accomplished; goal no. 2 not so much. It never ceases to amaze me how people can't ask a question. They frontload with run-on sentence after run-in sentence about this and that before finally getting around to the actual question. And they think attorneys are the only ones with an endless hypothesis. Then there were those people who have to tell a story.

Several had obviously watched one too many CSI's episodes and were suggesting to the police investigation techniques. One woman went on about checking cell phone records of 2 suspects recently apprehended. Like...the suspects wouldn't have immediately lawyered up and all sorts of court battles are being fought, not to mention subpoenas needing to be issued for phone records.

Anyway, I did learn that I could sign up for crime alerts, which I did. If my local police department has such alerts, I would imagine many do. :) Carol

The finale will be as I hoped for. While I've been a Danny Gokey fan from his audition, what I felt as the competition unfolded was that he was a great singer. However, what Kris and Adam [even though Adam is too hyperfrenetic/over the top in his performances for me] are artists. I think this is the first AI final where the two both perform with their own interpretation of the music. Kris blew me away last night and I'll be texting my votes for him next week. However, any of the final 4 could have been the AI, and I would be content. It's been a great season of talent. :) Carol

Star Trek!!!!!!!

One word: FAB-U-LOUS!!!!! Star Trek is back. I never quite cotton to the TV series that followed the original one. The combination of characters never snapped, crackled and popped.

The casting of the new movie is exquisite and the special effects are superb. I have to admit my personal fav was Bones played by Karl Urban; it took me a while to realize he had been in Lord of the Rings II and III. I have liked Chris Pine since Princess Diaries II. I also understand the buzz about Zachary Quinto as Spock...stellar. The rest of the casting for Chekov, Sulu, Scotty, and Uhura. Unbelievable.

If there weren't so many movies coming out that I want to experience in the theater, I'd be tempted to go see it again. :) Carol

I was sorry to hear of Dom Deluise's death. He always made me laugh. He had a wicked but 'gentle' sense of humor...no nasty slashing remarks in order to get a laugh.

Of course, my fav role of his was the director in 'Blazing Saddles'...what a hoot!

My anal side

I'm one of those people who likes to have everything planned out. It's not that I don't appreciate spontaniety, it's just there is sooooo much on my plate that I need to slot in order to fit it all in. I actually can almost plan out to the minute how long a task will take me, driving or otherwise.

Right now in the day job, I have an endless line of merit hearings over the summer. The first deadline for my NASCAR book is coming up, and I'm trying to get another proposal out. So on Sunday when I learned I was supposed to be going to the "Jersey Boys" show that night...and not next weekend as I was originally told, and another friend needed to swing by to use my computer/printer, I almost hyperventilated. Sunday remains my one 'pure' day of writing so I'm not a happy camper when people call or anything disrupts me.

Of course, "Jersey Boys" was a fabulous production, and I would see it again in a heartbeat. I did get some work done on my proposal. Instead of quickly cleaning the house, I told my friend she would have to take the house as is, and of course, she did.

However, I decided to give myself a break plus carve out a few more minutes. I've switched to paper plates, plastic forks, etc. to minimize washing dishes; I'm turning a blind eye to mess. House cleaning can come later...much later. :) Carol

When I heard the theme for tonight's AI was the Rat Pat, I thought 'oh no'. I doubted if even the contestants' parents had been born during the Rat Pack era.

But they blew me away tonight. If I had to pick the final 3, I'm leaning toward Danny, Kris and Adam. I'll never be a fan of Adam as he's too theatric for me. If I went to his concert, I wouldn't be able to relax and enjoy myself. When I come out from a performance, I want to have a mellow mood. The singer I would most enjoy in concert is Kris, but I would also buy an album by Danny.

I do think this is the best final 5 I've seen in the seven seasons I've been watching [I missed year one]. :) Carol

Talladega Nights and Days

First, I have to congratulate Brad Keselowski for his first Sprint Cup victory yesterday. Obviously, he's got to be feeling a-okay today.

However, that race is going to be remembered for all those heart-stopping crashes. I didn't get home until the last hour, but that meant I got to see the grand finale. I cannot believe Carl Edwards's presence of mind. To go flying up in the air, crash into the fence, do a couple spins with rollovers thrown in for good measure, and then have the car burst into flames...he gets out of the car and runs to cross the finish line in homage to Will Ferrell's 'Talladega Nights'.

For his winning the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway last Saturday night.

Yes, I know I'm a bit late with the congrats, but last week I was attending a Florida Bar seminar in New Orleans. Sweet. Sit through a lecture in the morning and enjoy the French Quarter Jazz Festival in the afternoon. I had a great time, but when we got back, my friend's mother had to be hospitalized. She's doing much better, thank goodness, and is out of the hospital, but I'm way behind in catching up. I'm looking forward to chilling and watching the Talledega races this weekend.

The AOL poll had it right for American Idol tonight. It was curtains for Scott. However, I'm glad that the judges allowed him to perform one last time since he's always come across as sincere in his efforts. If Lil doesn't get her act together next week, I suspect the judges won't exercise their save for her.

I have to admit, my fav part of the show was the surprise appearance of Frankie Avalon...I still love his voice and personality. Talk about career longevity!!! :) Carol

DWTS and AI

Man, I'm getting thumb tendonitis from flipping back and forth between AI and DWTS...and my channel switching even continued after AI was off because I like the show 'Fringe'. Most nights I don't give a hoot what's on TV and they have to schedule my favs against each other.

I wasn't surprised by the bottom 2 on DWTS, merely surprised that Lawrence Taylor wasn't the one to go. Poor Kim. I wish one season that the show would give her a decent celebrity so she can take the title.

As for AI, I guess limiting the category to the year they were born was too expansive for some of the contestants. I didn't even recognize most of the songs performed. By the 80's I was drifting to country and didn't pay attention to the pop/rock singers. However, I thought Danny started the show off with a bang...then it limped along to the final 3 performances. I do hope Kris makes it through because I think he's got a lot of talent; just poor song choice tonight. Lil is really on a bad, bad roll so I expect her to be in the bottom 3. Quite frankly, she deserves to be. She has a terrific voice but no individuality. The fact that she performed a Tina Turner song was a major yawn in the expectations department. The only thing I'm grateful for is she hasn't done a James Bond movie theme song yet ala Shirley Bassey [or if Lil has, I missed it]. Allison continues to rock it, and I hope she's not in the bottom 3; she so deserves to at the top of the voting.

Still, we're about at that point in the season where a fav unexpectedly doesn't pull in the votes and is in danger. I doubt if the judges will use their save on either Scott or Anoop, but it will be interesting if any of the others get in trouble. We're getting to the nitty gritty of the competition.

Shout out to Carrie Underwood & Julieanne Hough

First, major congrats to Julianne for taking the best new artist category last night at the ACM's. However, I'm soooooo proud of Carrie Underwood. She's one of only 7 female country stars to ever win Entertainer of the Year. That is tremendous accomplishment. Even though I love and adore George Strait, I was thrilled for Carrie. I'll do my cheering for George when he's honored for Star of the Decade later on in May.

Overall, the ACM's were stellar last night with loads of great performances...and Taylor Swift's appearance engineered by David Copperfield was way cool. :) Carol

I have to say that I'm not surprised with the eliminations last night on DWTS [in fact, I'm grateful] or tonight on AI. While I've enjoyed Megan from her audition, she hadn't progressed/developed during the last few shows so I figured it would be between her or Anoop. I suspect Anoop has a bit of the teenage contingent voting him through, but he needs to go next unless he makes a giant stride forward.

Kris is now my dark horse candidate to win. Most people I speak with have it between Danny and Adam, and I was agreeing, but that Kris. He is developing by leaps and bounds, and I enjoy listening to him. Very interesting season. :) Carol

Before the show airs tonight with the double elimination, I figured I'd better comment. I'm becoming a huge Ty Murray fan. He's adorable, he's nice, he's solid, and to me, what the show is about. Who would have thunk that a bronco buster could do the Lindy Hop?

I like a few of the others, but Ty's the one I most look forward to seeing. I do hope that Holly or one of the Steve's hit the door tonight. I wanted to give both Steves a chance to recover from their earlier injuries, and much as I adore Lacey, I don't think she's got a partner to last long. But Derek!!!! He is such a great choreographer; I want him to stay in there so I can watch his innovative moves. :) Carol

Wow, what a great race today at Martinsville! I was a bit worried about the weather, but it cleared out. Not too many cautions and what an exciting finish! The way Jimmie Johnson bumped Denny Hamlin aside to take the checker flag! It was the stuff short track is made of. What was even more exciting was how for the most part it was a 4-way race among Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Hamlin and Johnson. Of course, for the Hendrick Motorsports, what a perfert way to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of its first victory.

Animal Cruelty

Everyone knows I'm an animal lover, but a local story tonight has made me distraught and sick to my stomach. A woman allegedly moved in with her boyfriend and left her 2 cats to starve to death in her apartment...no water, no food, just locked up and abandoned for at least 60 days.

The cats died a slow, horrible death. My recommendation for the owner's punishment? Locked up with no food, no water for 60 days. I hope they throw the book at her and she's imprisoned for a long time. Carol

I got wrapped up last night, trying to figure out the Amazon community boards and whether there should be any I should participate on as a quarterfinalist. [apparently some finalists are already running a 'twitter' campaign. talk about being behind technology-wise].

However, since last night's theme was my fav, the Grand Ol' Oprey, I listened/watched the performances with great interest. I thought Matt was hands down the best, although I also enjoyed Megan and Allyson's performances. However, I could have thrown the TV out the window when Adam destroyed the Johnny Cash classic. Sorry, but Adam probably will never see a text vote from me for the rest of the season. The way he stood after he finished...like he had done something special. As Simon said, self-indulgent rubbish.

I missed tonight's competition. My friends Lynn and Ray were celebrating their 23rd anniversary [woohoo!!!!]. The party was a blast and the restaurant was lovely, lovely, lovely, but I didn't get home until the last 5 minutes of the program. I didn't get what the last dancer [Gil?] was doing until one of the judges said something. I know all the women are ga-ga over him, but so far he leaves me shrugging my shoulders. Then again, he left me rolling my eyes in the movie Sex in the City, but since the whole movie left me cold, I won't hold that against him. It's funny, but I'm cheering more for the professional dancers than any celebrity. :) Carol

I had a friend over for pizza and a movie night, but I got to watch most of the race.

I've been doing some intense writing. I decided to enter the competition for the Mystery Writers' Annual Anthology because of the supernatural theme, but the short story didn't really come together for me until Saturday. I burned up the keyboard. I mailed off the story today so we'll see. Writing a short story was a new experience in terms of going after one professionally. When I was young, I churned and burned poems and short stories, but of course, none of those ever saw the light of publication beyond school publications.

Tonight I'm chillaxing and watching AI and the Dancing With the Stars results. :) Carol
